Wonderful Wednesday Pt 1

Greetings again. I cant believe that we are already looking at Thursday. I did not get a lot of stills for today but I did get some video which is included below. It is fun to see the kids having fun. I am pretty sure they had a very fun time today. So much so I did not get to some of my other activities.

Tuesday Terrific

Hi All. Just keeping you posted. Another great day. We discussed the four forces of flight (thrust, lift, drag and gravity) We were able to discuss in some detail drag and it’s two components (induced and parasitic drag). The kids had a whole bunch of fun on Skyfighters 1945. We paired off into two teams and tested our skills against each other. The R/C sim was introduced and we further explored X-Plane.

In addition to the camp events we had a little airshow happening near the airport. We saw several cool planes landing and taking off from the airport.

Monday

Hello All. Below are a few images of the days activities.

Day Five: Friday R/C, Clay

Hi All.  Today we built a larger R/C for flying, got dirty with clay. played with the sims and checked out on a R/C sim before we flew the R/C plane. The time went by quickly. It was 4 before we knew it and we almost missed the chance to fly. I’d like to thank each of you for attending. I really hope that you enjoyed yourself and learned a little about the physics of flight. For those attending next week… see you Monday. For those who are not please let me know how the camp was. I would appreciate the feedback as I try to make the camp a little better for each new group. Thanks all.

Some of the images below are of the interesting weather we had Wednesday night and yesterday.  Blue Skies.

Day Four: Thursday

I did not get that many pictures Thursday. Jeff was able to take the images that are used in today’s post.  Here they are:

Day Three: One More Sim

Greetings again. Today we introduced an R/C sim and flew a small R/C plane. Our discussions today centered on thrust and drag. Ask the kids about the two types of drag. We ventured away from the training in the X-Plane 9 sim and discovered several other planes in X-Plane. Some some good fun was had as they explored landing a 747 on Catalina and pushed the throttles forward on some of the Mars planes. Some more images are below.

Day Two: Growing and Flying

Greetings All. Day two Included two more activities. We started with a review of yesterday activities and then extended our experience with a Wright Brother explanation of the four forces which act on an aircraft and lift. We used an ATC Sim which allowed the participants to plan routes and speeds of converging aircraft. In addition, we explored several variables that effected lift on a wing. Okay, Okay… enough of the science and math talk.  Today was the first day we networked the flight sim and flew in the same environment. It was fun. Here are some pictures of the day. Also here are a few short and very rough videos from today. They show all of the flight sim activities. I did not get video of the other activities today. http://www.ustream.tv/user/aviation Cheers!

First Day of Camp

Eight campers built their models, did loops in a game sim, flew a plane from take off to landing (most successfully), and learned about four forces on an aircraft. An impressive day for the group whose ages ranged from 8 to 13. Everyone was eager to get started as soon as we got into the room. So eager that we started right in on the sims.

After a short while on the sims we began building our models and discussed the four forces on an aircraft. We broke off into two groups. One group went to the game sims and the other moved on to the training sim.

After a very short introduction to a greatly abbreviated take off procedure, I was very impressed by those who rotated, climbed out at a designated airspeed and made turns to the crosswind, downwind, base and final approach. A job very well done by all. I was pleased that the younger kids did as well or better than some of the older kids! Altogether a great job by all. The skills will continue to improve.

The game sim was just fun. We discussed kinetic energy and how it impacts a turn in 2D space as well as 3D space. A loop was completed by each with a variety of results. Once prompted to reduce power with the nose pointed down results improved. This will help when we move into the optional competition tomorrow.

Finally, each participant was respectful of each other and all had fun.

Thanks Sam, Mathew, Zack, Ruel, April, Ryan, Wyatt and Rohan! See you all tomorrow. Enjoy some of the photos below.
